Grossest dish in my Culture

Prompt: Haggis is the grossest dish in my culture. It consists of sheep's offal (heart, liver, and lungs) minced with oatmeal, onions, suet, and spices, traditionally boiled in the animal's stomach. It is absolutely disgusting. I have only had it one time and I had to spit it out. The consistency was chewy and grimy. I can promise that I will never have it again. Summary: Today we finished our presentations about food and culture. Reflection: I learned that many people have similar foods in their cultures.

After watching your classmates' cultural food presentations, reflect on what you learned about the relationship between food and culture.

Prompt Response:  I learned from my classmates that many people have very complex and different foods and cultures. For example, my classmate that have Mexican culture (Josue and Antonio) have foods like tacos, tortas, and new soups. Another presentation the surprised me was that Isaac had Honduran culture and he had many food that I hadn't heard of. That is unusual because I try lots of Hispanic and Latino foods in Plaza Fiesta. Summary:  Today we presented our Cultural food presentations. Reflection:  I learned many new things about people in my class and how their culture has different foods from mine.

Prompt: Think about one of your favorite memories involving food. Who was there, what were you eating, and why has that particular moment stayed with you?

Prompt Response:  One of my favorite food related experiences was when I went to Italy and had their gelato. I think I tried some sort of lemony flavor and it was the best gelato I ever had. My family and I had driven into a town that day that was famous for their lemons. In fact, they had lemons the size of volleyballs on display; they were real lemons. The town was very nice and I saw and talked to many tourists in the town. I just looked it up and the town was called Limone sul Garda. Summary:  Today we continued to work on our cultural food presentation. Reflection:  I learned more about my culture and the foods included in it.

Prompt: If you could share one dish from your culture or family traditions with someone who has never tried it, what would you choose? What would you want that person to understand about you or your culture through that dish?

Prompt Response:  I would give people fish and chips. It is beer battered fish with a side of french fries. It is a dish I hold dearly to my heart and really enjoy. I would want people to know that I am proud of my heritage. Also this dish goes back many years and has deep roots in British Culture. Summary:  Today we talked about food culture and began our projects on our food culture and our dishes. Reflection:  I'm excited to present my culture's dishes to the class and teach them about it.

Food Customs

Response:  One time, I tried a new culture's food. At first I wasn't accustomed to eating this new kind of food. Also when trying this food, we had to only use your hands. It wasn't super hard to do, but it was new. I had to be respectful and show how I was a nice and thoughtful person. I used their customs to eat their foods.  Summary:  We watched a video from a show where someone didn't know a culture's customs and was disrespectful to them. Reflection:  I learned that many cultures have different ways of doing things. In this case, you should let everyone get a portion before you load your plate up.

Prompt: Write about a time when you realized that your perception of a particular food was based on a stereotype. Explain what the food was, what you originally believed about it, and where that belief came from. Then describe how your perspective changed after experiencing or learning more about the food. Be sure to include specific details about the moment your thinking shifted and what you learned from that experience.

Prompt Response:  For most of my life, I just assumed that all British food was deep fried. Although much of the food is fried, there are still many dishes that are prepared other than frying. For instance, a dish called black pudding is seared in a pan and it is a sausage with blood in it. I have a broader perspective of the British cuisine now that I have done more research and been to the United Kingdom more times.  Summary:  Today we filled out the Louisiana food cuisine sheet. Reflection:  I learned more about the food and community in Louisiana.

Prompt: Today, we started our discussion about culture and food. What is one dish from your culture that is a must-have as a representation of your culture? Identify the dish and explain what it is and why it is significant.

Prompt Response:  One dish from my culture that is a must have is fish and chips. This dish comes from my Scottish culture. I like to make this dish with my family when it is a special occasion or maybe if we are having people over that have never had this particular dish before. The dish consists of beer battered or breaded haddock served with a side of french fries and tarter sauce. I really enjoy eating this dish; it is really yummy. Summary:  Today we watched a documentary on different foods made in New Orleans and how that affected the culture there. Reflection:  I learned more about New Orleans culture through this video.

Prompt: Writing about an offensive encounter can bring up different emotions, even when the story is imagined. What emotions did you experience while writing your story? What part of the writing affected you the most, and why?

Response:  One time I had an offensive encounter while playing basketball. Someone I was guarding scored on me and then he called me a bitch. I had to keep playing after this occurred because I was still playing a basketball game. After the game though, I thought about that interaction that I had with this person and I realized that I was guarding him well but he made a tough shot over me. He tried to belittle me but I stood my ground and didn't let him get under my skin. I felt good emotions because I was giving myself a broader perspective on my situation and others' situations. People can go through tough times but it takes a strong minded person to overcome that and not take your anger out on others. Summary:  Today we rewrote our Incident poem responses. Reflection:  I learned that many people that you meet aren't trying to be mean but they're just dealing with something that they find hard to cope with.
