Prompt: Write about a conversation that changed you.

  Prompt Response:  One conversation that changed me was a conversation I had with my mom. She told me that my Grandpa had passed away. It was a reality check for me. He passed away in 2018 on July 4. That whole day I was having fun and spending time with my family. When I got home my mom was crying and she told me the news.  Summary: My mom told me that my Grandpa had died and I got a reality check. Reflection:  I'm thankful for my mom telling me this and not hiding it from me.

Prompt: Write about something that you believed as a child.

  Prompt Response:  When I was a child I believed there was a tooth fairy. Every time I lost a tooth from my mouth, my parents told me to put it in an envelope under my pillow. The smaller tooth that I lost the less money I got. But the larger the tooth the more money I got. When I became about 10 years old, I realized that I was misled and falsely informed. Summary: During my childhood I thought that during the nighttime if there was a tooth under your pillow, the tooth fairy would take it and replace it with money.  Reflection:  I should do my own research next time and understand what is true and untrue.

Prompt: Write about a fear you have overcome.

  Prompt Response:  One fear that I overcame was swimming far out in the ocean. I was scared I would float away and never be found again. In 2021, I went to the Caribbean to go look at wildlife in the ocean. I saw things such as fish, coral, and other sea creatures. It took me a few minutes to finally jump in, but with the encouragement of my family and the instructors I gave in. I figured out it was fun to be in the water and see all the cool sights. Summary: I went to an island in the Caribbean to go look at wildlife. During this trip I overcame my fear of swimming in the middle of the ocean. Reflection:  I'm glad that I overcame my fear because now I'm not as afraid to swim in the water.

Prompt: As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you think you'll have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family, or society?

 Prompt Response: As I've grown up, I have had to debate who I think is the greatest basketball player ever. In my opinion, LeBron is the best player to ever play basketball. He has the most points ever as well as 4 NBA championships. Overall LeBron is the greatest player ever. Summary: I think LeBron is the greatest basketball player ever. Reflection: I hope others agree with me because no one else is greater at basketball than him.

Prompt: Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

  Prompt : One truth I was afraid to accept was that I wasn't good at soccer. This made me really sad because I couldn't play the game that I loved. Although I couldn't play the game I love, I found a new passion, basketball. Summary : I wasn't good at soccer. I began playing basketball after I stopped playing soccer. Reflection : I learned that sometimes you aren't good at everything.

Prompt: Write about a time when you were judged unfairly.

  Prompt Response:  One time when I was judged unfairly was when I was in 9th grade and we were in gym class. The team captains were choosing teams and I wasn't picked. Because they assumed I was bad, I felt unfairly judged. But the next game, I was picked up and I showed them how good I was. It was a good lesson for the people that they shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Summary: I wasn't picked up in a game of basketball. I felt unfairly judged. Reflection: You shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Imagine you are learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the very first time. What would you be curious to know about the traditions, foods, music, or celebrations?

  Prompt Response:  I would want to know how the food culture was developed. Also how the agriculture affected the food that the Hispanic people are. I know that many Hispanic dishes are influenced by corn. Summary: I would like to know how the food culture was developed. Reflection:  If I could spend more time on the topic I would want to learn about the music.

After viewing your classmates’ poem posters, select one presentation that caught your attention. Describe what you enjoyed about it or something new you learned from their work.

  Prompt Response:  One poem poster that caught my attention was Aaron's poem poster about fear. He connected fear with prison, saying that fear with confine you and "keep you in prison." I enjoyed his presentation because he was engaging and there were also some humorous parts in it. Summary:  I enjoyed Aaron's poem poster. Reflection: I learned a new way to describe fear.

In “The Interlopers” by Saki, Ulrich and Georg view each other as interlopers, outsiders intruding on their land and their lives. Think about a time when you felt like an interloper or when someone else felt out of place in your world. How did that situation affect relationships, emotions, or outcomes?

  Prompt Response:  There was a time in middle school when a new kid came to school. He joined my friend group but he didn't quite seem to fit in. He seemed like he was in an entirely new world. Some of the conversations were awkward and he always wanted to be accepted. He eventually ended up changing schools. I hope he is doing well. Summary: There was a boy that came to my middle school and he didn't fit in. Reflection: Maybe I should have tried to help him become a friend in our friend group.

Of today’s 15 vocabulary words, which three do you think you will use the most in your speaking and writing this semester? Explain why each word feels useful or powerful to you.

  Prompt Response:  Ambiguous, Altruistic, and Affluence are words that I think that I will use the most in my writing. I will use these words because they can be related to American Literature in some fashion. Whether it is talking about different writers or different topics these words can be connected to them. Summary: I think I will use the words Ambiguous, Altruistic, and Affluence later in the semester. Reflection:  I want to expand my vocabulary and become more knowledgeable on it.

It’s Homecoming Week! 🎉 What do you love most about being part of the Lakeside community? How do you show off your school spirit? What is your favorite Homecoming tradition or event?

  Prompt Response:  The thing that I love most about being part of the Lakeside community is being around all the great people that go to this school. I show off my school spirit by wearing the homecoming week outfits. My favorite homecoming tradition is the pep rally. The pep rally shortens the classes during the day and it is fun with everyone in the gym. Summary: I like going to the pep rally and being a student at Lakeside. Reflection: This school is really fun and enjoyable.

Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on actvities. Select one and tell why.

  Prompt Response:  I prefer to do hands-on activities because they allow me to understand the topic better. The other methods aren't bad for me, I learn well with all of them, but this method produces the best results for me. Summary:  I think doing hands-on activities is the most beneficial for me to learn. Reflection:  I want to learn how to improve my learning capabilities.

Which aspect of creating a poem do you enjoy the most? Tell what it is and explain why.

  Prompt Response:   I enjoy the thought process that comes with making a poem. I like coming up with something cool and meaningful. The poem that we are currently making is allowing me to use my mind to create a good poem. Summary:  I enjoy the thought process in poem making. Reflection:  I want to become a better writer and poem maker.

After reading Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "Constantly Risking Absurdity," which explores the poet's daring craft, write about your most absurd personal experience. Describe a single, specific incident that felt ridiculously bold or foolish. Ensure your response is vivid, concise, and captures the essence of absurdity.

  Prompt Response:  In 2021 I traveled to one of the U.S. Virgin Islands called St. Croix. My family thought it would be a fun trip and a great way to be on the ocean. While we were there, we went on a coral reef tour where we went in the water and looked at all the ocean wildlife in the reef. The guide told us before we got in the water that it would be safe. Once I got in I looked around and was shocked to find a barracuda swimming about 30 feet away from my dad and I. Although I was terrified, I continued swimming because I didn't wan't to miss the amazing sight. Summary: I went to St. Croix and got scared by a barracuda swimming in the reef. Reflection: I'm thankful that the fish didn't hurt me and I got away unscathed.

You are currently working on a soundtrack for selected Emily Dickinson poems. With that in mind, if asked to choose a song to describe your life right now, which song would you select and why?

  Prompt Response:  One song that I would use to describe my life is "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. This is a great song to describe my life because everything is positive and I'm really enjoying my life right now. I see my friends and family everyday and I get to play my favorite sport. Life is good, you know what I mean. Summary: I'm having lots of fun living right now. Reflection:  I'm glad I have lots of great people in my life as well as things to do.

If you were to compose a poem about one aspect of your life, which topic would it fall into and what would your overall life's message be?

  Prompt Response:  If I were to compose a poem about one aspect of my life, it would be about my work ethic. I work very hard in everything that I do. Whether it is school or basketball, I always try my hardest and want to succeed. I put in the hours to become one percent better everyday of my life. Summary: I work very hard in all things. Reflection:  I enjoy becoming a better and stronger person. I hope to reach my goals.

You’ve been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. How has the class been going for you so far?

 Prompt Response: This class has been fun and informative. I've enjoyed learning about Native American Literature as well as Emily Dickinson poems. They have given me a new understanding of literature and how it is written. Summary: This class has helped me understand American Literature better. Reflection: I want to continue to learn about American Literature.
